A few good facts about Ashland Regional Airport (DWU): it opened in 1948, has a single Runway 10/28, approximately 5,402 feet long and 100 feet wide. It also has GPS instrument approaches for both Runway 10 and Runway 28.

Why AKY is the code we have!

AKY is very intuitive as a local branding code because people can naturally read it as:

A = Ashland
KY = Kentucky

So AKY = Ashland, KY immediately makes sense visually, even though it isn't the airport's official FAA identifier.

That actually makes it a strong code for an AVIATE lifestyle hat, because:

  • AKY looks like a traditional three-letter airport code.
  • KY immediately identifies Kentucky.
  • The A naturally represents Ashland.
  • It's easier for someone from Ashland to identify with AKY than DWU, which doesn't visibly reference the city.
  • AKY also happens to be the Amtrak station code associated with Ashland, giving the letters a genuine transportation connection to the city.
  • It works particularly well for a local-market hat where the goal is “Ashland, Kentucky pride” rather than strictly reproducing an FAA identifier.

For your product page, I would word it something like:

AKY — Ashland, Kentucky

Inspired by Ashland's connection to travel and the skies, AKY represents the heart of northeastern Kentucky. Home to Ashland Regional Airport and positioned along the Ohio River, Ashland has long been a crossroads for aviation, rail and river travel. AKY combines Ashland + KY into a simple three-letter code made for those who call Ashland home.
